Istanbul-based, Hareket Heavy Lifting and Project Transportation Co. has completed the installation of power generation equipment at the Takhiatash thermal power plant in Uzbekistan using an Enerpac SBL1100 telescopic hydraulic gantry. The gantry was used to lift and place two sets of gas turbines and generators weighing 357 tons and 292 tons respectively.
The new gas turbines are part of an upgrade to the Takhiatash thermal power plant (TPP) to meet rising electricity demand in the western part of Uzbekistan. Built in 1974, the Takhiatash TPP has an installed capacity of 730 megawatts. The upgrade project includes the construction of two combined cycle gas turbine units with a capacity of 230-280 megawatts. This will increase the plant power generation capacity from 730 megawatts up to 930 megawatts and electricity output will rise by 1.7 times, up to 5.4 billion kilowatt hours.
Hareket Heavy Lifting and Project Transportation was responsible for the installation of the GE Power GT13E2 gas turbines and generators. With its Enerpac SBL1100 hydraulic gantry, the gas turbines were first lifted from a self-propelled modular transport (SPMT) and skidded 88.5 feet (27m) into the plant along a 131-foot (40m) gantry track and lowered onto a concrete foundation, followed by lifting and skidding the generators 54 feel (16.5m) for positioning in front of the turbines.
“The SBL1100 gantry gave us the heavy lifting capability we needed to handle the turbines and generators easily and safely,” says Samet Gürsu, Operations Director, Hareket Heavy Lifting and Project Transportation Co. “In combination with the skidding track and wireless control system for accurate positioning, we were quickly able to lift and install the power generation equipment.”
Powerful Lifting System
The SBL1100 is Enerpac’s highest capacity boom style gantry. Equipped with three stage lifting cylinders, the SBL1100 lifts up to 39.39 feet (12m) at the top of the third stage and can handle up to 1178 tons (10,484 kN) at the top of the first stage.
As standard the SBL1100 features an Intelli-Lift wireless control system allowing unobstructed views of the load. The wireless system ensures automatic synchronization of lifting with accuracy of 0.95 inch (24mm) and automatic synchronization of travel with accuracy of 0.60 inch (15mm). The gantry control system allows users to operate the lift locally at each leg or use the Intelli-Lift remote control. For enhanced durability, the SBL1100 offers a sturdy, proven base frame that can withstand a variety of environmental conditions.
